A woman decided bruised butts of roller-derby girls can make great art

Riikka Hyvönen is an artist that played roller derby for a while as a hobby, and inspiration struck as she was looking at the injured derrieres of other roller derby girls. There’s art in everything and Riikka’s work is proof of that.

And make no mistake about it – for us these bruises might seem trivial, but in roller derby, players flaunt them as trophies and are also known as ‘derby kisses’. It’s common practice for the multi-colored contusions to be shared online and Hyvönen also thinks these photos are a display of mental strength, showing that players are tough enough to stay on the track even when injured.

The artist is aware her work objectifies these women, although it does so the same way they objectify themselves and even the titles of her works are based on comments the girls posted under the original pics when they were shared online.

These art projects are not just unusual in their choice of subjects, but also for the way they’re made. I guess you could call these almost-3D works of art made with acrylic and leather, half paintings, half sculptures. Take a look and let us know if you spot baby Jesus in one of these bruises.
